KARMME Stories

A visual story of KARMME ladies

Shibori Stories | Collage Edits

Combining travel photos spanning 23 years from designer Imby Langenbach, the Shibori Collage Edits series tells the story of how landscapes, textures, sights, smells and feelings shaped the range of KARMME’s bespoke shibori range clutches .

Antarctic icebergs, the Isle of Capri, sunsets in Darwin, sweeping sand dunes in Africa alongside New York cityscape from atop the Twin Towers September 10th, 2001 are some of the recorded memories chosen to be woven by graphic artist and visual story teller, Eloise Jenkins in this series.

This is a bespoke range, each piece unique, art transformed to a functional form with layers of memories and stories gathered and attached to each piece.

AZURE | The Isle of Capri is where we found ourselves one Easter when living in London and poring over a map looking for an adventure and sunshine. The smell of white gardenias permeated the air, beautiful Europeans sipped limoncello perched on yachts moored just a short swim from shore and sampling every gelato flavour was top of my to do list. It was the sparkly seas and myriad of blues that punctuated each turn that I thought of as I named this beauty.

BELIEF | The long wild coast of Western Australia. I grew up in Perth, it wasn't until I left that I realised how isolated and untouched our landscape is in Western Australia. Camping trips 'up north' involve days of travel, not hours. Wind swept coast beats salty air onto your skin, harsh sun almost unbearable to withstand as an adult but soaked up for hours as a child. This pink lake, one of the beauties in Kalbarri, a tribute to the strength within the harsh elements, carving it own way, shaped by the forces around it. There is a quiet strength to her, she follows her own path, a journey unknown, veering at times to explore, testing the possibilities, yet finds her branch again to continue. She is sure, she has wisdom and confidence.

BLOOM | New Zealand's South Island in the Spring was an unexpected postcard picture perfect scene at every turn. We were greeted in Queenstown with blossoms like cotton wool balls on seemingly every branch we passed, in every stage from bud to the full reveal of beauty. Magnolia's backdropped by clear blue skies filled with crisp clean air only concreted my love for this magnificent flower, so very different to the one in the graveyard at the end of my street in London, backdropped so very often with grey drizzly skies. BLOOM was all about Spring, the coming out from grey to pink sunset skies with a fresh wardrobe of crisp white. BLOOM... for the anticipation of what Spring will bring. Summer skies at sunset painted with fire and the blush of youthful optimism.

BLUSH | pinky, corally, red earth, rocks and sunsets are what greet you even as you fly over the Northern Territory of Australia. Living in such a large country, it's no wonder there is so much diversity in landscape. After experiencing the wonder that is Uluru at sunrise and sunset the drive up through the centre of this land is wide, it's vast, its mostly dry and it's most definitely hot. Sunsets in Darwin must rival any as some of the most spectacular in the world, a hot ball of flames sets over the ocean, filling the sky with all shades of pink that slowly take over the clear blue that was the day. She's the sister to BLOOM, she's soft and gentle, a little like fairy floss or a bag of pink and white marshmallows. Peachy, pinky perfection. She is the feminine touch to any outfit. She is so pretty and whispers Spring/Summer

STRENGTH | the balance of force and softness, when cracks appear, the beauty forms. Sossusvlei in Namibia, the seemingly soft wind creates patterns, slowly, over time, in the vast sand dunes that span kilometres into the desert.  Juxtaposed against the New York City scape. This image taken from atop the Twin Towers the day before they fell, carefree tourists enjoying this throbbing city from above, with no hint as to what was to come. This city, full of bravado, showed its force and softness as it grind to a halt in shock but then gathered to move forward. I remember thinking as I passed a young woman sobbing on her front door step of a New York apartment block, the cracks that had appeared that day formed the beauty in my mind of that city, no longer one of bravado but one of strength. The crackle effect showing the softness that can go hand in hand with strength.

GLACIAL | deep icy crevices, so deep it felt like the sun could never reached that far. The white changing gradually to blue. Slippery and dangerous but so very breathtaking and the sheer scale beyond your belief. My memories of walking over glacial fields, reinforced and seered into my mind when we visited Iceland and weaved, freezing, between icebergs in Jökulsárlón, a still, beautiful, yet eerie lake, home to icebergs, their form shaped by the forces of nature.  I grew up listening to adventures had by my parents, travelling. I in turn left when I could to travel and see these places and more for myself. I met my husband who thankfully, also wanted to explore our globe, which we then did together. My parents now 70 just returned from Antarctica, it was on my Dad's list, not my Mum's she didn't want to cross Drake's passage on the ship. However they did, and that's when I saw photos of icebergs for real, proper, Antarctic Icebergs. They told me its like nothing else on this planet they have witnessed. It's on my list. GLACIAL is a special design, the inky shades of blue penetrate where they can and just like its namesake, lines and markings are etched in an organic but somewhat ordered fashion.
